What Asking for Help Actually Looks Like

A new nurse thinking about asking for help.

“Hey Nancy… can you come look at these vitals and what I saw in the room… and tell me what you think?”

Nancy looks busy.
She won’t want to help me

She had worked with me since nursing school.
We were work besties.

I’ll figure it ou

Help arrives

“Nancy says—where are you going?”

I turn back.

“I really think I need to call the doctor on this patient.
See… here are the vitals I got…
and she looks gray… and is struggling to breathe.”

Nancy followed.

When we got to the room, she took her time.

She assessed my client.
Asked questions.
Waited for answers.

I stood there waiting.

Longer than I expected.

Long enough to start thinking—

I made a mistake…

Maybe asking for help doesn’t have to sound right…
