Your Questions, Answered
What is One on One Tips?
One on One Tips is an Indianapolis-based nursing education business led by Rhoda Sommer, RN, MSN Ed, who has more than 40 years of nursing experience. We offer one-on-one NCLEX tutoring and new nurse mentoring.
Who do you work with?
Two groups: nursing students and graduates preparing for the NCLEX, and new graduate nurses navigating their first months on the job.
How is this different from a big NCLEX prep course?
Large group courses teach everyone the same way. Here, you work directly with Rhoda, who finds out how you think through questions and builds your plan around that, not around a one-size-fits-all video library.
What is the difference between hospital mentor program vs One on One Mentoring ?
. The biggest distinction is that your New Nurse Mentor Program is independent of the nurse’s employer. That changes what a new nurse may feel comfortable talking about.
Independent support outside the workplace. You are not the nurse’s manager, preceptor, charge nurse, educator, or coworker.
A place to talk openly about a difficult shift. A nurse can tell you what happened, what confused them, what frightened them, or what they wish they had handled differently.
You are not reporting their mentoring conversations back to their boss. The purpose is mentoring and learning—not employee evaluation. (Of course, your program should still have clear boundaries for situations involving immediate safety concerns, abuse, or other legal/ethical obligations.)
No performance evaluation. You aren't deciding whether they pass orientation, receive a favorable review, or keep their position.
They can admit, “I don't know.” New nurses sometimes hesitate to expose weaknesses at work. With you, identifying what they don't understand becomes the starting point for learning.
Real-shift problem solving. They can bring a situation from work and you can help them think through: What did you notice? What did it mean? What could you have done? Who should have been involved? What will you do next time?
Clinical judgment development. Rather than simply telling them what they should have done, you help them develop the reasoning needed to make their own safe decisions.
Help with the things orientation may not fully cover. Prioritization, delegation, time management, calling providers, handling difficult coworkers, giving report, asking for help, and recovering after a mistake.
Support that isn't tied to one hospital's culture. Your focus is the nurse's development, not the needs or policies of a particular employer.
Experience behind the mentoring. You bring more than 40 years of nursing experience, including bedside nursing, teaching, nursing education, and nursing leadership.
A bridge between passing NCLEX and actually becoming comfortable as an RN. NCLEX gets them licensed. Your mentoring helps them learn how to live and work in that license.
